Folding Wingtips for Improved Roll Performance

Future aircraft designs look set to use longer wingspans increase the aspect ratio and therefore overall aerodynamic efficiency of airframe. Such larger also reduce roll rates require increased control surface area achieve maneuver requirements for certification. In this work, effect using flared folding wingtips (FFWTs) on performance simple wings is investigated numerically experimentally. A unique rolling rig designed, manufactured, tested, with a series steady transient tests performed different wingspans, without wingtips. It shown that FFWTs can enable improved due span while significantly reducing damping roll, such wing incorporating comparable one additional span.
